How will Brexit affect Apprenticeships and Apprentices?
There has been an extensive concern amongst the population; concerning labor shortage in the U.K- this is an undesirable possible consequence of post-Brexit.
How will this benefit Apprentices?
Our Education Secretary, Justine Greening, has advised every employer to offer apprenticeship schemes to drive the “skills revolution for Brexit Britain”. Additionally, our Prime Minister, Theresa May, has guaranteed three million new apprenticeships by 2020. This just shows that there can be light at the end of the tunnel for our labor force, post-Brexit.
Also, there will also be an increase in Degree Apprenticeships. Fundamentally, this will allow students to earn whilst learning as well as attaining a degree if they chose too. This is an alternative to University as Degree Apprenticeships grant students with a traditional certificate if they choose to attain a degree, yet the process involves a more modern approach as it involves the learning/practicing of skills and gives students experience in their chosen field.
Employers have been granted an Apprenticeship Levy from the government. This involves a payment that will be collected from large employers in both the public and the private sectors. It will be used to improve the quality and quantity of apprenticeships.
As Brexit starts to take shape and the UK continues to implement plans for the future, I will update you on how this affects you as apprentices.
