How will BREXIT affect Students in the UK and EU?
What is BREXIT?
BREXIT is a term used to describe the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union.
Background of BREXIT.
On June 23rd 2016, there was an ongoing and controversial debate regarding the UK’s continued membership as part of the EU. The public was given the opportunity to vote through a referendum and most people were in favor of the “Leave” campaign. However, the referendum remained uncertain.
In 2017, the House of Commons voted mainly in favor of the Brexit bill- this authourised the Prime Minster, Theresa May, to invoke Article 50 on February 1st 2017. May signed the papers on March 29th triggering Article 50. This signing was a formal letter to the EU that would formally start their two-year negotiation window.
Theresa May, in recent interviews, has assured the UK public that the UK is set to officially leave the EU on March 29th 2019.
What does Brexit mean for UK Students?
Due to Brexit, it is highly likely that UK students looking to study abroad will face considerably higher fees as they will no longer be eligible for domestic rates.
What will a UK student need to study abroad and what advantages are UK students no longer entitled to?
Students may need to apply for a student visa. In some situations, students may face reduced rights to work during or after their studies.
How will the Brexit affect exchange programs for British students?
British Students may also not be eligible for funding via the Erasmus exchange programme. Though, universities will try to sustain reliable exchange partnerships in and beyond Europe.
How will EU student tuition fees be affected?
For students within the EU who start their studies in the academic years 2017/2018, fees and financial aids will remain the same before the Brexit vote. However, in Scotland, the same cannot be assured.
In the future, it is likely that EU students will be expected to pay higher fee rates like those from outside the EU. Despite the increase, some predictions have stated that the pound may fall in value, leaving the UK more affordable for international students to study in.
Will EU students need a student visa to study in the UK after BREXIT?
Throughout the Brexit debate, immigration controls have been a huge topic. Following the news, it seems that they are likely to introduce new regulations. If these new regulations include the UK removing existing agreements on freedom of movement, EU students may need to apply for visas, in order to study in the UK.
