How can I increase my chances of being employable?

When applying for an apprenticeship, internship, placement or graduate scheme you are competing against other applicants. Depending on the company or position you’re applying to this could number in their thousands.

What can I do to stand out?

Employers love to see a portfolio. This could be any sort of evidence from blogs, skills, work or volunteering experience that shows your desire and interest in that career path.

Before applying for any opportunity you must understand the qualities and skills that the employer is looking for so that you can acquire and/or develop those skills prior to an interview.

For university students who have a placement year coming up and a dream company in mind, it’s important to understand what they’re looking for in a candidate. This will give you an idea of the type of internships or volunteering placements you should undertake during the summer or even some short courses you should complete or networking sessions you can attend in order to get noticed.

It’s all about knowing how to maximise your time so you can improve your chances of success which I know sounds corny, but CEOs didn’t get where they are by taking the relaxed approach.

Bearing that in mind it’s important not to take on more than you’re capable of doing. Do everything in proportion whilst making sure you are still hitting your goals. Try to take everything in your stride to ensure that you don’t overburden yourself.
